River Cauvery is unquestionably the lifeline of the agricultural industry in South India particularly that of Coorg, as it originates in this quaint little district. It is therefore, no mystery as to why this river is worshipped with such reverence here. It’s safe to say that it is the presence of this river alone that makes Coorg such a rich land in terms of agriculture and natural biodiversity.
All the minor and major rivers and streams that flow through the length and breadth of Coorg are offshoots, tributaries and distributaries of this mighty river.
Farmers will tell you what a great boon it is to have a river or stream flowing through, or in close proximity to your estate or farmland. The most important benefit is undoubtedly having a reliable water body which ensures a steady harvest; especially in the event of a monsoon failure, which has become more than common in today’s times. It also means that the farmers are vaulted to a position to carry on an additional round of irrigation which is always a harbinger of supreme harvests.

Streaming its Way through Coorg!
River fish are an important part of Kodava cuisine, which we owe once again to the numberless sprinklings of brooks all over our land – all originating from the Ganges of South India – the River Kaveri.
The aesthetic appeal that these water bodies add to their surrounding environment goes beyond what words can say. The serenity, calm and tranquility that they resonate, reminds you almost instantly of the world that exists beyond our man-made universe rotating on an axis of sublunar possessions.
Rivers and streams are ideal picnic hot-spots and fishing retreats. It’s always wonderful to have your own little getaway, especially one where you can play host to family and friends. The larger rivers are ideal for river rafting and non-specific family recreational activities. To own your own pleasurable destination, uninterrupted by outsiders is quite a privilege, I’m sure you’ll agree.

A Brook
The picturesque appeal of these rivers and streams, have attracted quite a hoard of National and International film-makers and documentarians, who flock to these waterways of Coorg quite frequently. It is never unusual to hear that some family in some part of Coorg is playing host to such-and-such acclaimed Actor or Director.
